Pentoxifylline（PTX）， 4-（2，6-Diamino-pyrimidin-4-yloxy）-1，3-benzodioxole-5-carboxamide is an inhibitor of the enzyme cyclo-oxygenase (COX). Inhibition of this enzyme by PTX leads to suppression of arachidonic acid metabolism and subsequent reduction in formation of prostaglandins and thromboxanes that are critical mediators of inflammation \[1\]. These anti-inflammatory actions can be useful for the management of IBS symptoms， as reduced peripheral COX activity has been associated with a reduced risk of developing irritable bowel syndrome \[2\].
In addition， recent studies have highlighted potential benefits of PTX in the management of cancer and cardiovascular disease. For instance， it has been shown that long term supplementation with low doses of purified PTX (40mg/day) inhibits growth and induces cell death in MCF7 human breast cancer cells and other types of tumour cells including colon， lung and prostate carcinoma cells \[3\]. Furthermore， treatment with PTX reduces monocyte infiltration into injured mouse cardiac tissue and decreases the release of pro-inflmmatory cytokines after myocardial infarction， suggesting that this drug may have protective effects on damaged cardiac tissues \[4\].
However， despite these promising findings， clinical trials are necessary before any definitive conclusions can be drawn about the safety and efficacy of PTX in treating chronic diseases such as cancer and coronary heart disease.
